POLISH TATRA SHEEPDOGS are very independent, self-thinking, highly intelligent, able to assess situations without human guidance.
|
► The TATRA dog needs an owner who is intelligent, preferably with prior big
dog experience. The owner MUST be a strong alpha leader, fair and loving
and very consistent with all rules.
► The TATRA dog needs early socialization and then throughout its entire
life. Basic obedience is a MUST. Good fencing a necessity and mandatory.
► The TATRA dog is devoted and loving to his family and close friends. Very
reserved around strangers. Territorial of home and surroundings.
► The TATRA dog will sound BIG WARNING BARKS at anything it deems
suspicious or strange. Will bite eventually if challenged or pushed.
► The TATRA dog is wakeful and vigilant during night hours. If left outside,
will patrol property and territory. Will bark at anything out of place or unusual.
► The TATRA dog sheds its undercoat profusely in late spring and must be
brushed and groomed. The rest of the year it stays remarkably clean due to
its self-cleansing coat. These dogs are dry mouthed—do not drool. Seldom
require a bath.
► The TATRA dog loves snow and cold weather. They are very weather
resistant.
► The TATRA dog has dietary needs that are very small due to low
metabolism. Adult dogs eat 4-5 cups of high quality adult maintenance dog
food per day, less in summer.
► The TATRA dog generally gets along well with other pets and is NOT
highly dog-dog aggressive.
► The TATRA dog is generally very gentle with well behaved and mannerly
children. Will not tolerate abuse from children or adults.
► The TATRA dog occasionally will show hip dysplasia(under 20%). Very few
reported cases (less than 1%) of patellar luxation, juvenile cataracts, epilepsy,
allergic dermatitis, and bloat (gastric torsion).
